Del Oro went 5-0 to take first place at the Drew Esquivel Duals (Healdsburg, CA) this weekend. The team advanced out of the initial four team pool with wins over El Cerrito HS (82-0), Elsie Allen (Santa Rosa, CA) (64-6), and St. Mary’s (Stockton, CA) 58-15. In the semifinals the team dispatched Franklin of Elk Grove 66-12 to set up the championship match against Vista Del Lago (Folsom, CA). Del Oro started out strong with three pins to set the tone of the match before Senior Chino Igarashi moved up a weight class and dropped a 8-3 decision to Cameron Isenogle (currently #25 @ 152 lbs in CA). Junior Wyatt Alexander followed up with a pin at 160 lbs to make the score 24-3. Freshman Evan Hilman found himself in a tough spot in the next match as he entered the third period down 5-11. His Vista opponent chose neutral to start the round and Hilman took his opponent down twice to narrow the deficit to 9-13 before scoring the winning takedown to a fall. Del Oro won 5 of the next 8 matches to finish the match 60-19.
